The Richmond Braves 13U Majors welcomed their first weekend of good baseball weather by showing perennial powerhouses from the Carolinas how the boys from Virginia play baseball. Facing legitimate arms from the first pitch through the last out, the Braves went undefeated enroute to a 5-0 record on the weekend and captured the Spring South Carolina Super NIT championship. The Braves played complete baseball this weekend. Monumental performances on the mound by the Braves rotation coupled with stellar lock down defense kept the offenses of the opponents in check. The Braves' bats got hot at the right time. An aggressive hitting approach all weekend long was highlighted by a towering homer by JT Carter in the championship game. The tournament included pool play victories over the Carolina Gators and Florence Panthers leading to a #3 overall seed. The Braves quickly dispatched the Panthers again in the quarterfinals 10-0 setting up what was ultimately the game of the tournament. In the semifinals, the Braves found themselves down 4-1 to the North Carolina Evoshield Canes but heart, ferocity, and team play helped them chip away at that lead to force extra innings. The gloves were once again showcased as the boys survived the bottom of the 8th facing a no outs with runners on second and third situation. The Braves iced it in 9th by scoring 3 runs, holding serve and advancing to the championship against the Dirtbags. A 1-1 championship game was blown open in the 5th with the solo shot and several timely hits leading to a 5-2 victory and the championship. With that win the Braves 13U Majors qualified for USSSA Elite World Series July 23 in Kissimmee, FL. The Braves 13U Majors look to keep the momentum rolling as they prepare for Border Wars this coming weekend in Rocky Mount, NC.
