Greenbrier Christian senior pitcher Matt Matthews out dueled Cape Henry star pitcher Jack Wynkoop in the TCIS Championship game at Old Dominion. Matthews threw a masterpiece 10 innings allowing no earned runs and striking out nine. He didn’t register any 90+ fastballs on the ODU scoreboard radar gun but he threw enough breaking balls to last the rest of the season.
“My curve all is probably my second best pitch,” Matthews said. “I also throw a slider which is my biggest strikeout pitch and I throw a sinking 2-seem fastball and a circle change.”
Matthews played for the Richmond Braves National team for the past 2 /1/2 years in showcase ball and he was voted to the All-TCIS 1st Team. Matthews posted a 5-3 record including a miniscule 1.44 earned run average in 58 innings. He struckout 77 batters and he led the staff with five complete games.
